Do you have a blog for your wedding photography business? If you haven’t started a blog yet, now’s definitely the time to do so (and we’ll tell you why in just a minute)! Or, maybe you already have a blog, but struggle to come up with photography topics to write about.

We totally get it! Coming up with content ideas can be difficult, especially when you’re busy with all of the other work that comes with owning a wedding photography business. Yet, blogging on a regular basis is one of the best ways to attract new clients. In fact, by creating blog posts around strategic topics, you’ll be much more likely to attract your dream wedding client.

Here’s how it works:

Why strategic blog post topics matter for wedding photographers

Content marketing (meaning your website content, blog posts, social media, etc.) is a key way to increase exposure to your work as a wedding photographer.

Thankfully, this type of marketing is a perfect fit for wedding photographers. Think about it: since you take a lot of photos, content is naturally something you have a lot of. If you can share your work with the right people, your photos will speak for themselves and draw clients to you!

Plus, couples in wedding planning mode are doing a ton of research online. They are researching everything from their venue, wedding dress, floral design, photographer, and so on. These couples don’t just want written information; they want to see visual examples (aka your gorgeous photos) that will inspire them as they plan their own weddings.

Therefore, sharing your wedding photography work and knowledge through blogging on a regular basis is a natural way for you to grow your audience and attract new clients!

Effective content marketing for wedding photographers

Set your marketing focus On specific locations

For this content marketing technique to be effective, a wedding photographer should aim to attract two kinds of website traffic through their marketing efforts:

  • Local website traffic (meaning traffic from people who are potential clients in the primary area you live and work in)

  • Traffic from locations you would like to travel to for work (for destination weddings, elopements, etc.)

For example, maybe you’re a wedding photographer based in Los Angeles, but you’re also wanting to photograph more weddings in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Therefore, you’ll want to gear your content marketing toward people who live in all of the above locations (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle).

Here’s where your blog comes in. Strategically-written blog posts are one of the most effective ways to get the attention of people in these locations! This is why it’s so important to pick photography topics to write about geared toward people who live in these areas and are planning a wedding that you would be a good fit to shoot.

Don’t worry about beating out top wedding websites

We do want to note that, when it comes to blogging, it can be hard for your blog posts to show up higher in Google search results than the posts from a top wedding website like Wedding Wire or The Knot. That it is totally okay! Actually, beating out these wedding websites isn’t necessarily your goal. Remember, you don’t want to attract just anyone to your site. Rather, you want to appeal to couples getting married in your chosen location(s) and who fit your niche.

Because of this, it’s not always helpful to write super broad blog posts that can appeal to any couple, such as “Wedding Planning Tips for Every Engaged Couple.” It is likely that many other sites have similar content, including those large and well-established websites we were talking about. Instead, try writing a post geared toward your dream wedding client, such as “Wedding Planning Tips for an Intimate Los Angeles Wedding.” Your topic just became way more specific, so there will be a smaller number of other Google search results to compete with. More importantly, this niche topic allows you to focus on appealing to a specific audience subset that is highly likely to want your services!

How to pinpoint your dream wedding client

To write blogs geared toward your ideal client, this means you need to know who your dream wedding client is.

Here are a few questions that will help you find your niche and pinpoint your ideal wedding client:

  • What kind(s) of weddings do I love to shoot? (Large wedding, small weddings, elopements, intimate weddings, destination weddings, etc.)

  • Where does my ideal client live and/or want to get married?

  • What kind of wedding and/or photography budget would my ideal client have?

Once you’ve found this, you can select photography topics to write about for your blog that will attract these clients!

Wedding photographers should drive website traffic by utilizing keywords

The best way to attract the right people to your website is to implement good SEO practices such as using keywords in your blog posts that match what potential clients (aka engaged couples planning their weddings) are searching for on Google.

For example, some keyword searches could be:

  • Austin wedding venues

  • Non-traditional wedding in New Jersey

  • Los Angeles wedding photographer

  • Intimate wedding in Hawaii

  • Winter wedding in Lake Tahoe

What did you notice about these keywords? Most of them have to do with a location and/or some other specific detail, such as a season or type of wedding. By writing blog posts geared toward these keywords and including the exact keyword phrases throughout your post, your content will be more likely to appear higher in search results for these specific Google searches.

However, utilizing keywords in your blog posts means you do have to write out content, not just post galleries of photos.

It’s more work to write out content along with posting photos, but it’s worth it. Again, people planning their weddings are doing tons of research, so if you can be a resource to them and show your expertise, your appeal as a potential hire will grow immensely.

Using keywords is an important part of writing an SEO friendly blog post. If you have no idea where to start when it comes to SEO, check out our guide: What is SEO?

Top 10 photography topics to write about for wedding photographers

So, where to begin? What blog topics or keywords should you focus on to attract your dream client? To simplify things for you, we’ve made this guide of the top ten photography topics to write about that will help you attract your dream wedding clients.

#1 - Best engagement session locations in [your area]

One of the best photography topics to write about is a list of the best engagement photoshoot locations in your area (or an area where you’d like to work). This topic is beneficial for a couple of reasons.

First, it’s location-specific, which is great for attracting clients in the locations you’d like to work in. Anytime you can include a location-specific keyword, you’re on the right path!

Second, having engagement photos taken is usually one of the first steps couples take after getting engaged. If you take their engagement photos, you can dazzle them with your work early on in the wedding planning process. Often times, wedding photographers will do engagement and wedding photos for a couple, so marketing engagement sessions along with wedding photography just makes sense!

#2 - Guide on what to wear

Our next tip is to create a guide on what a couple could wear to their engagement session and/or wedding. Consider the weather, climate, and seasons in your area. Taking these factors into consideration, write out your recommendations on what couples should wear depending on what time of year it is or what the weather conditions are like. You can also make suggestions on what the wedding party or wedding guests could wear, too.

Tip: include wedding outfit trends in your area and outfit inspiration from your previous clients.

#3 - Write about weddings that you love to photograph

Remember how earlier we asked what kind of wedding(s) you love to shoot? This question can also be worded: what type(s) of weddings do your dream wedding clients want?

Some answers to this question could include things like:

  • Intimate elopements

  • Formal, classic weddings

  • Whimsical, boho weddings

  • Civil ceremonies

  • Non-traditional weddings

  • Laidback destination weddings

  • And so on!

Your answer to this question provides the topic for this next blog post idea… Write out blog posts talking about the type(s) of wedding you specialize in photographing.

It just makes sense: you love to shoot these kinds of weddings. You’re GREAT at it. So, focusing some blog posts around these kinds of weddings is a win-win!

We recommend writing out these kinds of blog posts narrative-style, taking your readers through the story of the day. Then, you can include a gallery of photos from this wedding that follows along with the story you wrote out in your post.

Be sure to refer to other local vendors who worked on this wedding to attract people from their audience base as well.

Tip: remember to use keywords! For example: if you’re writing a blog post titled “An Intimate New England Wedding,” you should use this phrase through the content of your post.

#4 - Top 10 favorite wedding venues in your area

Finding a wedding venue is one of the first, most important decisions in the wedding planning process. In fact, couples often look for a wedding venue before planning any other element of their wedding. So, write a list of your favorite top 10 (or any number) venues in an area you work in often (or want to work in).

This kind of post will help capture the attention of your potential clients before they’re even looking for a wedding photographer. Then, when it comes time to look for one or choose one, they’ll already have your gorgeous work and expertise in mind!

BONUS: If you’ve photographed a wedding at any of these venues, include your photos in this blog post so you can show off your work!

#5 - A styled wedding inspiration shoot

Sharing a blog post about a styled wedding inspiration shoot you photographed is a great way to create content that can attract your dream wedding client. Write out a post going over the shoot, what you loved about it, where it was held, the inspiration behind it, aesthetic of the shoot, etc. This will help give couples a clear idea of what kind of weddings fit your style of photography.

Additionally, participating in a styled shoot is great because it allows you to partner with other top vendors in your area. When you post your blog about the shoot, you can refer to these vendors and get website traffic from couples searching for these vendors, too.

Besides choosing a wedding venue, wedding dresses are another thing brides start searching for early on in the wedding planning process. A styled shoot blog post is a great way to write content to appeal to a bride searching for the wedding dress of her dreams!

#6 - Comprehensive client guide or location guide

Another one of the best photography topics to write about is some sort of guide for your potential clients. This kind of blog post will comprise elements of many of the other blog post ideas listed here. What distinguishes this topic is that the goal is to be as comprehensive as possible. You’re going to cover alllll the options available for couples planning their wedding.

For example, a location guide can talk about the main locations for weddings in your area and can break them down by price, venue type, guest capacity, aesthetic, and so on.

Another great take on this topic is a comprehensive client guide where you break down all the photography aspects of a wedding day. Wedding planning is stressful. You know this, we know this, and your clients know this. The more you can simplify and streamline the process for people, the more likely they are to see value in hiring you.

So, your comprehensive client guide can include:

  • All the technical/logistical info you need from them (contact info, payment/deposit info, etc.)

  • The timeline for your services (for example: you’ll arrive when hair and makeup are being done, you’ll need X amount of time for portraits, it'll take one month for you to get wedding photos back to the couple, etc.)

  • What the couple can expect from you on their wedding day. To put it another way: what they can expect working with you to look like

  • An FAQ section

  • Add ons, specialty services, and up-sells that couples can add to their photography package

Consider including a downloadable PDF of these guides as a freebie in your blog posts. You could even offer these freebies as a resource people receive after signing up for your email list.

#7 - Wedding day checklist

Providing a blog post based around a checklist of wedding day essentials is also a great, compelling resource for your audience.

Plus, it pairs perfectly with another freebie idea: consolidate your blog post into a concise, downloadable checklist of what a bride needs on her wedding day to be ready for her wedding photographs.

Include practical, essential items such as backup makeup, gum, hairspray, an umbrella depending on weather, etc. As we’ve said before, the more you break things down and make it simple, the better! Couples are always looking for ways to simplify the wedding planning process.

#8 - Offer a solution (“how to” post)

Since we just mentioned that the goal is to help simplify wedding planning, another great blog post topic is one that solves a problem couples getting married in your target area(s) may face.

We like to call posts that offer a solution as “how to” posts. This phrasing is another one that is specifically geared towards Google keywords. People looking for answers on Google will often start their search terms with “how to…”

“How to” blog post title examples:

  • How to Plan for a Rainy Seattle Wedding

  • 10 Tips on Beating the Summer Heat at Your Outdoor Austin Wedding

  • How to Plan an Elegant Estate Wedding in Atlanta on a Budget

#9 - Venue highlight

Are you noticing a theme in our tips on photography topics to write about? We keep coming back to the same point because appealing to specific locations is so important for wedding photographers! One of the best location-specific blog posts types is a venue highlight.

For this blog post type, you’re going to take a deeper look at a top wedding venue in your area that you’ve photographed. Write about what makes this venue special, the aesthetic it matches, etc. Prioritize showing off your awesome work! Yes, your goal is to share insightful information about this venue, but it’s also to highlight how well YOU are able to capture weddings at this spot!

#10  - Sample wedding day timeline

Wedding planning is often full of unknowns and last-minute changes. The more you can prepare your couple for (and show you are prepared) the better!

This is why we recommend creating a blog post explaining one or two sample wedding day timelines.

Layout the typical time frames of weddings you’ve photographed and mention any unique, important timing factors to keep in mind during the couple’s special day.

Depending on the time of year, include the time of golden hour changes. Write about when golden hour is throughout the year in your target areas, so your couples know when the best times for wedding portraits will be. You should also include outside factors like having to account for driving time between the ceremony and reception, etc. These details are easily forgotten about in the midst of planning, but are crucial for things to run smoothly on the wedding day.

It’s also helpful to include a couple different timeline variations. For example, include one with a first look for portraits before the ceremony and another with no first look and portraits taken after the ceremony.

Your goal for this post is to prepare a couple as much as possible, so they don’t have to spend tons of time trying to figure this out on their own.

These photography topics to write about will help you nail your content marketing

Overall, to attract your dream client, you need photography topics to write about on your blog that will appeal to them. Once you know who your dream client is, you can write blog posts around where your dream clients are, what they’re searching for, and what wedding planning research they’re doing.

Don’t forget: you’re a wedding industry expert! You’re a genius at wedding photography. You have so much good, helpful information to share.

The more you share the ins and outs of wedding planning and essential wedding tips for your niche and target audience, the more value visitors to your site will see in you. If you can get these dream clients to view your content and find it helpful before they’re even looking for a wedding photographer, you’ll be a shoe-in when the time does finally come around.
