Pinterest for Wedding Photographers: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

Andrew and Casey from Second Fiddle meeting with a wedding photographer explaining Pinterest for Wedding Photographers and everything they need to know to get started.

Pinterest for wedding photographers is a no-brainer. It’s a free, organic marketing platform, where your ideal client is intentionally researching wedding vendors just like you! The potential for Pinterest to become your #1 source of website traffic to your wedding photography business is extremely high.

In this post, you’ll learn the importance of Pinterest for wedding photographers (aka, why you can’t afford to not be on Pinterest).

You’ll also learn about the importance of first identifying your ideal client so you can apply that information in key ways when setting up and maintaining a thriving Pinterest account.

Understand the Significance of Pinterest for Wedding Photographers: Your Target Audience is Already on Pinterest

It’s simple: your target audience is all over the platform.

Pinterest tells us that an estimated 40 million people use Pinterest to plan their wedding every year!

This means there is always a demand for new wedding content on Pinterest (your content) and it’s more of a guaranteed hot-spot for potential wedding clients than any other social media platform. Yes, even more than Instagram!

As a wedding photographer on Pinterest, you want to be creating Pinterest boards that target the various aspects of the wedding industry (dresses, cakes, venues, styles, etc.) and then pin your content to each relevant board in order to maximize your reach and get in front of more brides and grooms.

Think of pinning on Pinterest as the equivalent to posting on Instagram, so each time you pin to a board you are essentially ‘posting’ to Pinterest for others on the platform to access what you’ve pinned.

Example: If you have a blog post with 50 wedding images and pin each image to 5 relevant Pinterest boards, you just turned those 50 images into 250 Pins -- all from just one blog post!

A feature that Instagram doesn’t have that Pinterest does is when other people post (aka ‘pin’) your pin it gets a boost and can then reach even more people! It’s functions like these that make Pinterest more appealing to businesses when it comes to getting your content out there.

Pinterest is Designed to Drive Traffic to Your Website

Pinterest describes itself as a ‘visual discovery engine’.

In essence, it’s a search engine, and your goal as a wedding photographer is to create a Pinterest account and pin eye-catching content that resonates with your dream wedding client so that they’ll notice your content and click through to your website.

It’s no secret that one of Pinterest’s goals is to get its users off their platform and onto someone else’s in order for their users to learn, create, purchase, etc.

The bottom line is that with the way Pinterest is designed, there is so much potential for traffic to be driven to your wedding photography website from their platform so you can start booking more clients!

Identify Your Business Goals and Target Audience Before Implementing a Pinterest Marketing Strategy

You can’t create marketing goals until you have a business goal! This is vital.

Pinterest is a great way to market your wedding photography business organically and for free, but you need to know what your business goals are in order to keep your efforts from becoming diluted from lack of a clear vision.

Your overall business goals will help you decide where to aim your marketing efforts. Do you want to focus on destination weddings or grow your reputation as a wedding photographer in your local area? Is your ideal client more likely to get married on a rooftop downtown or in a vineyard in the countryside.

Take some time to dream and cast vision for the kind of business and clientele you are aiming to build. This will allow you to understand how you need to position yourself to appeal to your target audience.

We love this quote by Jenna Kutcher,

“Know your target audience and speak to them intimately”.

A great way to ‘know your audience’ is by creating marketing personas or as we like to call it your ‘Dream Client’.

We’ve created a FREE WORKSHEET for wedding photographers just like you with 10 simple questions to help you identify your target audience (aka dream client), so you can start speaking directly to them with your content!

Pinterest Account Setup & Ongoing Pinterest Strategy

Hopefully, you’ve taken the time to fill out the free worksheet, because once you’ve pinpointed who your target audience is (aka your dream client), you’ll be able to utilize this valuable information as you optimize your Pinterest account and implement it in your ongoing Pinterest strategy.

Everything You Need to Optimize Your Pinterest Strategy

  • Optimize Your Pinterest Account with Keywords: When you understand Pinterest is a search engine, you realize that utilizing Pinterest SEO practices like keyword research is imperative to getting your content in front of your target audience. Part of your keyword research should include considering what kind of keywords your target audience is using in their search queries.

You can then use these keywords throughout your Pinterest account in order for your content to rank well for those targeted keywords.

Check out our blog How to Use Keywords on Pinterest for our best practices when conducting keyword research and where to implement these keywords on your Pinterest account.

  • Pin Consistently and Strategically: Pinterest recommends adding “new Pins over time rather than uploading a bunch at once.” Pinterest says this method of pinning actually helps you reach a wider audience.

    • Recommended Tool: The good news is you don’t have to be on Pinterest all day every day in order to keep up with a recommended pinning schedule! We use a Pinterest scheduling app called Tailwind to schedule all of our Pins several weeks in advance. That way, our content is being pinned to Pinterest on a consistent basis and at the most ideal times (one of the many incredible features Tailwind offers)! Not familiar with Tailwind? Check out our blog, What is Tailwind.

  • Pin Content that will Attract your Dream Client: Remember to keep your eyes focused on your target audience. If your dream client is a Parisian bride with an elegant style, you’re not going to attract their attention by pinning images from your rustic barn weddings.

    • Pro Tip: If you don’t have the kind of content you want to be known for in your portfolio, don’t wait for your dream bride to hire you, instead, consider putting together a styled shoot that replicates the kind of wedding and dream client you want to attract.

  • Optimize Your Pins with Keywords: You can pin the most stunning wedding images to your Pinterest account, but without utilizing the right keywords in your Pin titles and descriptions the likelihood of them being found by your ideal bride is very low. If you haven’t already, check out our blog How to Use Keywords on Pinterest for our best practices on how to optimize your Pinterest Pins using keywords.

  • Expand Your Content by Pinning to Multiple Boards: Going back to the example we mentioned earlier, if you have a blog post featuring 50 wedding images, don’t just pin each image to ONE Pinterest board, instead, pin each image to EVERY relevant board to multiply your content and expand its reach.

    • Pro Tip: If you haven’t created at least 5 Pinterest boards that would apply to every piece of content you create, you need to check out our blog about Pinterest Board Ideas for Your Wedding Photography Business, so you can start maximizing the reach of your content and reach your target audience.
