As a wedding photographer, you are likely to be more comfortable behind the camera than sitting down and writing. While you might not be a natural wordsmith, this shouldn’t deter you from maintaining a blog as a way of keeping your content fresh, relevant, and updated. You don’t have to be an expert on how to write a wedding blog in order to start one.

Blogs are a vital way to propel and circulate your work. The importance is less the blog itself, and more the potential reach of where you can catapult the URL through tactical Pinterest and Social Media use. While there are plenty of benefits for getting your portfolio ‘out there’, the ultimate aim is to drive potential clients directly to your website, where they are most likely to schedule a booking. This is why you need to know how to write a wedding blog in order to expand your reach and attract your ideal client.

  1. Speak to your ideal client

    Now that you’re aware that having a blog is a vital key for your wedding photography business, don’t just write whatever or attempt to speak to everyone. A great place to start is by asking yourself the following questions in order to hone in on the kind of content that you want to focus on:

    • Who is your primary audience? 

      • Are you seeking to educate fellow photographers, or become a resource for brides and grooms?

    • What is the message that you are aiming to communicate to your audience?

    • What could you write and teach about with authority?

    Once you have identified who your ideal client is, write to him or her ONLY. When embarking on the process of how to write a wedding blog, it can be easy to want to write to everyone in order to attract more business but if you’re writing to everyone, you’re writing to no one.   2. Utilize SEO and Pinterest

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of driving traffic to your website from organic search results (versus paid ads) from a search engine. It’s about optimizing your content on your website so that a search engine, like Google, lists your content as a top result for a specific search.

    • Optimize each image by adding Alt Text.

      • Adding a short, descriptive, and hidden ‘Alt Text’ for each image is a fantastic way to enhance the SEO of your blog. 

      • Featuring both your photography brand name and your geographical region of work will enhance your SEO and increase exposure to brides and grooms looking for photographers in your area.

    • Pin every image to your Pinterest account. 

      • The beauty of a photo journal is that it gives you a chance to upload 100-150 new pieces of content to your Pinterest page. Since the Pinterest algorithm favors ‘Fresh Pins’ -  you will be rolling out weeks worth of content that you can guarantee will perform well.       • Using a third-party scheduling app, such as Tailwind, will allow you to create an ongoing content calendar and scatter your new photos into the upcoming months. 

  3. Feature a wedding

    As a wedding photographer, whether you’re just starting out or have been doing it for years, you likely have at least one wedding photo gallery that you can share on your blog. Another idea on how to write a wedding blog is to feature a wedding you have shot in the past. Your blog post can be as simple or as detailed as you want it to be, but be sure to include:

    • Who is your couple?

      • Who are they?

      • Where are they from?

      • How did they meet?

      • What are their personalities like?

    These details help your readers get an idea of the photos they are about to see and allows them to get to know the couple and even put themselves in their shoes and get excited about their own special day. 

    • What is their engagement story?

      • Everyone loves a good romance story. Share the details of how the couple met and how he or she proposed. Craft a handful of questions you can ask every couple in order to include the information in future blog posts. You can ask questions like:

        • Where did you get engaged?

        • How did he/she propose?

        • What are you most excited about in the wedding planning process?

    • What is the venue?

    Did you know that blog posts featuring the venue are more likely to rank higher in Google if you optimize them well? This is great for SEO and increases your chances of being found by your ideal client in your geographic area. For example, if you live in Austin, Texas, and shot a wedding at Prospect House, be sure to tag the venue so that a bride searching for that specific venue for her wedding can find you! The impact of these external links means that you are more likely to appear for brides and grooms who are doing wedding research in your area.

    • Be YOU and be personable! 

    Don’t stress over how to write a wedding blog because, as much as a couple hires a photographer based on his or her skill set, they also are attracted to a photographer who they personally feel is a good fit for them and their special day. This is why it is important to be yourself and write from that place so that you will attract clients who enjoy you and vice versa!

    The best way to boost your organic search rate is by targeting exactly what your future clients might be researching. Put yourself in the shoes of a bride or groom and think about the kinds of questions they might be asking in the midst of their planning. Using your experiences working in the heart of the wedding industry, offer insight that positions you as an expert in the field.

    • What are the benefits of having a wedding photographer on your special day?

    • What are the “Do’s” and “Don'ts” when hiring a wedding photographer?

    As a wedding professional, don’t underestimate your knowledge and experience in the industry. Most newly engaged couples don’t know what you know! How to write a wedding blog may seem daunting, but you know information that the majority of to-be-weds don’t know yet! Share your experiences. Highlight your expertise. Be confident in what you have to say. If you don’t know how to write a wedding blog, just start with what you do know and then go from there!

  5. Just start and be CONSISTENT!

    The trick when figuring out how to write a wedding blog is not to overthink it. Try to build a writing cadence that doesn’t seem overwhelming. Relax, have fun finding your style, and keep it up!
