Blogging: Your Secret Weapon to Attracting Clients

Regularly posting to a blog for your wedding photography business is the perfect place to start attracting those much-needed clients. Yes, having a blog is a must for wedding professionals, and no, blogging isn’t dead. Your blog gives potential clients a place to find you, get to know you, and learn what you’re all about.

We believe that having a blog for your business is an important part of attracting clients. That being said, what do you actually write about? Where do you start? How do you get blog post topic ideas?

We’re here to help answer those questions! We know that writing isn’t for everyone and coming up with wedding blog ideas isn’t always as easy as it might seem. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of wedding blog post ideas for wedding photographers to help get you started today!

As you start to brainstorm wedding blog ideas, you need to be led by one guiding question: what are my ideal clients looking for?  What kind of questions are they googling? What kind of information do they need? All wedding blog posts need to run through that filter before you commit to writing them.

Epic Wedding Blog Ideas for Wedding Photographers

A knowledge-based blog is a great way to use your expertise to help future brides and grooms as they plan their wedding, while an image-based blog is a great way to showcase your work and display full shoots or events that you’ve photographed. This will give your ideal client a more full picture of your personal and unique photography style.

Speaking of ideal clients, if you’re not sure who yours is, we’ve created a useful tool that will help you identify who your dream client is by answering 10 Questions to Identify Your Dream Client.

#1 - Wedding recap posts (aka “portfolio blogs”)

As a wedding photographer, you likely have a TON of photos from past engagements, weddings, and events. Regardless of how long ago those shoots took place, those photos will make great content for blog posts. Why not showcase a wedding, engagement, or styled shoot that you shot by using those beautiful photos?

Along with those images, a great wedding blog post idea would be describing what you loved about the shoot and why you loved it. If it’s an engagement shoot, tell the story of the couple: how did they meet? When did they fall in love? How did he propose?

If it’s a wedding, share highlights from the day: what did the groom’s face look like when his bride walked down the aisle? What was your favorite part of the day? If it’s a styled shoot, describe the process of the shoot: why did you choose the location you chose? What was the inspiration behind the shoot?

These are effective blog post ideas because the options are ENDLESS! You can post so much of your own content and talk about the events from your unique angle. This is also a great way for potential clients to actually SEE YOUR WORK and read about your experiences with past clients! Not to mention, the images from these blogs are perfect content for Pinterest that will help you start attracting your ideal client!

Don’t forget, when you’re writing these types of wedding blogs, you’re not only talking about the shoot, you’re also selling yourself and your services! While you’re gushing over the day and the couple, be sure to come at it from an angle that also allows readers to see how working with you will make their wedding day or engagement session unique and special.

#2 - Best wedding venues by region

One of the biggest “to-do’s” for planning a wedding is booking the wedding venue. Another wedding blog idea is to compile a list of the top wedding ceremony and reception locations in your area. If most of the weddings you shoot are in Austin, Texas, do some research on the best wedding venues in Austin. Include important details for each wedding venue such as maximum capacity, how far in advance you must book, and what it is that makes this wedding venue so alluring.

When deciding which venues to write about, don’t just write about wedding venues you currently work with or have worked with in the past. You should also write about venues you want to work with, but haven’t had the opportunity to shoot at yet. This helps readers identify you as someone who is knowledgeable about these venues, which can increase the chances of them hiring you to shoot their wedding at that location!

#3 - Help choosing a wedding color palette

As a photographer, you have an intuitive understanding of light and color. This is priceless information for your clients! A written blog post on how to create an amazing color palette for a wedding - everything from the bridesmaid dresses to the flowers - is an amazing resource in the wedding planning process.

#4 - Answer a question you were asked by a client (FAQ)

Do you get asked the same questions in your DM’s or email on a regular basis? Perhaps people always message you asking, “How do I know which photography package to choose?” or “What do you suggest I wear to an engagement shoot?” These are great blog post ideas because they are an opportunity to really highlight your expertise. When people are asking these questions, they are looking to YOU as the expert!

You could also consider creating a poll on your Instagram asking your followers if they have any wedding questions they’d like to ask you. You can then write a blog post or several blog posts answering those questions. This wedding blog idea works well because it also allows you to see what your followers actually want to know!

#5 - Explain the best twists on wedding traditions that you’ve seen

Everyone planning a wedding is trying to decide what traditions they’re going to keep and how they’re going to put their own twist on them. Write about the different ways that traditions can be changed or celebrated in new and fresh ways!

#6 - Create an “Ultimate Guide” post

An effective wedding blog idea is to create a guide for something that your ideal client would love to know more about. Perhaps you’ve noticed that on the wedding day, a lot of the bride’s stress about the process and timeline of taking photos. They’re not sure which shots they want and what order they should take them in to maximize time and energy. In this case, you could write a blog titled something like, “The Ultimate Guide to Planning your Wedding Day Shot List and Timeline.”

Here are some other possible “Ultimate Guide” wedding blog ideas to write about:

The Ultimate Guide to:

  • Choosing a Wedding Photographer

  • Dressing for an Engagement Shoot

  • Packing for an Elopement

  • Getting Married in New York City

#7 - Do’s + Don'ts when choosing a wedding photographer

Another great wedding blog idea is to address what to do and what NOT to do when choosing a wedding photographer. Educate your audience on what’s important when considering hiring a wedding photographer and let them know what would be best to stay clear of.

Not only does this wedding blog idea educate your readers, but it also opens up the possibility of them choosing YOU as their wedding photographer. This is because, by writing a blog like this, you are demonstrating that you genuinely care about them having the best wedding day experience possible.

#8 - Best wedding venues by wedding aesthetic

What kind of weddings do you normally like to work on? You likely have an aesthetic sweet spot, whether that’s on the glamorous and formal end or something more intimate and creative. Figure out what kind of wedding aesthetics fit under the umbrella of your brand and offer information that’s relevant to brides and grooms planning for that kind of wedding.

Venues are a huge area of inside knowledge you have to share - so think about blog post ideas like ‘5 Best Boho Wedding Venues in Orange County’ or ‘11 Incredible Wisconsin Vintage Wedding Venues’.

#9 - Answer a question that no one is answering

Planning a wedding can feel very overwhelming for couples because there are so many things to think about and plan for. There are a lot of questions that couples have regarding wedding planning and a lot of them don’t get answered or addressed by those in the wedding industry.

For this reason, another wedding blog idea is to address a question that isn’t being talked about within the industry. For example, many couples want to know WHY photography packages are “so expensive”. They know having a wedding photographer is an essential part of their special day, but they’re not sure what they’re actually paying for and why they’re paying for it.

Perhaps you can write a blog that answers the question: “Why are wedding photography packages so expensive?” and describe the time and energy that goes into photographing a wedding that most people wouldn’t even know about.

A blog like this will help educate people about the wedding photography industry as well as allow you to build trust with potential clients. As you break down what people should get when they work with a wedding photographer (which should be the same thing they’d get when they work with you), and you clearly explain the value of those services, people will easily see the value of hiring you!

#10 - Create and share a checklist, cheat sheet, or reference guide

Trust us, everybody LOVES a good checklist or cheat sheet. Every bride/groom out there is spending hours and hours on Google searching for the answers to the same questions that every to-be-wed looks for after getting engaged. Why not create helpful and EASY resources that will set them up for success on their special day? Here are some blog post ideas about helpful resources you can create:

#11 - Don’t forget about engagement shoots

Remember, before they start wedding planning and looking up amazing wedding ideas on blogs, couples may want to book an engagement shoot. Even if you don’t personally offer engagement shoots, you can still write about them to attract your target audience of engaged couples.

For many people, the engagement shoot is the first time they’ve done a full photo shoot. Questions about what to expect from it, what to wear to it, good venues to host it in, and what kind of poses to do will be on their minds - and that’s where you can step in.

#12 - Share about something in the industry that excites you

Every wedding professional has certain things they love or are drawn to within the wedding industry. It could be certain wedding dress trends, the first look, personally written vows, etc.

This wedding blog post idea is especially important now that the wedding industry looks a lot different than it used to pre-COVID-19. There are so many new trends in the industry right now because couples have had to get creative as a result of COVID restrictions.

A unique take on this wedding blog idea could be to write about something that you are excited about and that is currently trending in the wedding industry. For example, elopements, mini sessions, or micro weddings. If it’s trending, you know there are going to be A LOT of people searching the topic.

#13 - Interview a client

This wedding blog post idea gives potential clients a window into what hiring you as their wedding photographer would look like by sharing the experience of a past client. It’s also a fun way to get some personal feedback from a client about their experience of working with you. Ask a few of your past clients if they would be willing to answer a few questions that you can post on your blog. For this wedding blog idea, you could ask questions like:

  • What were you looking for in a wedding photographer?

  • What was a memorable moment you had from your day?

  • What was your favorite part about working with me?

  • What is something you would want a bride/groom to consider when hiring a wedding photographer?

#14 - Should you hire a wedding planner?

Write an amazing article all about the pros and cons of working with a wedding planner. This is a great chance to shout out the epic wedding planners you've worked with in the past!

#15 - Talk through DIY vs vendor options

As a wedding photographer or a wedding planner, you’ve been to so many weddings! You’ve seen all kinds of combinations of wedding favors and decorations. Use your experience to write up an exploration about what it takes to opt for DIY vs outsourcing to vendors. When is it worth it?

#16 - Create a glossary of wedding industry terms

A lot of jargon gets thrown around the wedding industry world, and it can be intimidating for a newly engaged couple doing their research. Create a helpful resource by collecting and explaining the kind of terms that venues, vendors, and photographers will use.

#17 - Recommend local vendors

This is a huge one - part of learning to market your wedding photography business is to tap into the network of wedding vendors around your area. Featuring a shortlist of the people you’ve worked with in the past and who you’d recommend is a sure way not only to attract potential clients onto your page but also to create goodwill in the community. It’s a step closer to being featured on their websites, too.

#18 - Talk through wedding lighting

When it comes to wedding photos, lighting is everything. But it’s not often at the top of a bride-to-be’s list when it comes to planning a wedding! Blog post ideas that think through the lighting aspect of wedding planning are so helpful.
